The Story of The Baute's
The family story of the Baute's is one of simple German folk who immigrate to Indiana. They were farmers since there immigration to the Americas from when the Wheeler and the Kobbes came over. The two who first did this were Benjamin Kobbe and Johnathan Wheeler.
Benjamin who represents my grandfathers mothers side came from Prussia as well as his fathers side. The same is true of the Wheeler and Hobbs families on my grandmothers side. When they moved to America they came to a small area in present day Indiana called Bartholomew and all 4 families have lived there since all the way through my mother.
The only historical events that ever effected my family on this side were the Great Depression and World War 2.
The Great Depression lasted from around 1929-until the mid 1930's. During this time many people were hungry and out of work. Although it had a great effect on much of the US Indiana in general did pretty well. During this time farming was down but local factories in Columbus that made steel and such did well. Both my great-grandfathers on this side abandoned farming for a while and moved to these factories. Doing this allowed them to make a decent living compared to the rest of the country.
World War 2 had a small effect on my immediate family but a slightly larger one on more extended family. Firstly my grandfather was passed over in the war draft because he was too tall. The bigger effect was that some of his cousins were sent to the war. To be exact six cousins. Three lived through the war and three didn't. Two of the three who died were trying to storm Normandy when this happened. The third was never found and is still listed MIA. The other 3 never saw real war as they were stationed at Camp Atterbury which served as a POW camp for Italians as well as German soldiers.
